One run upstairs to collect warmer clothes later, and Kastle and I were on our way to the front door.

"Hey!" Brigid appeared from the breakfast room, Nadia and Persephone at her heels. The cat meowed and scampered over to Kastle. "I was wondering where you two were hiding. Where are you off to?"

"We've got a lead," Kastle explained, squeezing Persephone. "There might be something in the maze for us to find."

Nadia's eyes went wide. "Have fun with that; the maze is freaking weird sometimes. Especially at night."

"Well, we are not going there at night," I said, steering Kastle towards the doors outside. "Besides, we think we know who the mistress was. But we'll tell you that later."

A frigid breeze whistled across the estate. I pulled my coat tighter and led the way across the lawn. A blanket of grey clouds covered the sky, leaving everything rather sombre. A long gravel path weaved across the grass, past the apple grove and dower house - I averted my eyes without even meaning to - towards a man-made forest of white birch surrounded by a high wrought iron fence. Just before the gate to the forest was a small, high wall of yew hedges, with a tall iron gate in the middle.

"I guess that one painting was done from here," Kastle said, stepping back a little and surveying it. Persephone sniffed around the gates. "It's not very big."

"It does not need to be," I said, giving the gate a yank. It came open easily, revealing a somewhat dark tunnel of leaves. It seemed even colder inside. I shivered and added "But Nadia wasn't wrong in saying it's 'freaking weird'. Like everything around here, it has stories attached."

"Is it haunted too?" Kastle said wearily, stepping inside. He looked left and right, and jumped, swearing. "Who thought putting a statue there was a good idea?!"

"The designer, clearly," I said, smirking and pretending the very tall, corroded satyr statue wasn't the slightest bit unsettling. "Come on, we have a centre to find."

"Give me that piece of paper," he said firmly, pulling off one of his gloves and pushing up his sleeve. I handed it over. Around his wrist was a bracelet made of half a dozen interwoven leather straps, wrapping around a chunk of lapis lazuli. If I were a normal person, there wouldn't have been anything special about the bracelet, but as a Veilwalker, the crystal pulsed faintly with light. Kastle held up the paper, looking between it and the crystal with a frown of concentration.

He didn't have a lot of experience with psychic tracking, but he knew enough.

When his eyes lifted from the crystal, I grabbed his shoulder, and for a moment I saw what he saw: a shining, dark blue thread of light, spilling out of the crystal and weaving its way down the path to our left. With any luck, it would lead us straight to the middle.

Of course, I could have just walked straight through the hedges, but this was more fun.
